Types Of Plastic Used In Injection Molding

Jun 25, 2024

The manufacturing process begins with design and prototyping. Once the final version of your product is ready to go into production, an injection mold will be made of your design.

Various types of plastic can be used in the process for injection molding in Utah. Here are a few common examples, along with some of their features and benefits:

Polystyrene

This is one of the most commonly used plastics for injection molding in Utah. Parts made with polystyrene have low shrinkage and are less prone to warping. Polystyrene can also be implemented in both solid and foam forms.

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)

This thermoplastic polymer is a common material in injection molding due to its affordability and ease of use. It’s also a stable material resistant to impact and chemicals and has insulating properties. ABS can also withstand a wide range in temperatures. ABS is often used to manufacture products like tools, electronics, home repair equipment, and toys.

Polycarbonate

While additional treatments may be needed to make polycarbonate scratch resistant, it’s a very strong, shatter-resistant thermoplastic. Common products produced with polycarbonate are bulletproof glass and eyeglass lenses.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE)

This plastic resin material is cost-effective, strong, and resistant to moisture and chemicals.

Polypropylene

This material is commonly used to create medical products and devices. It’s a significantly tough  material that resists wear and tear, radiation, cracking, impact, and extreme temperatures.

Polyamide

Commonly known as Nylon, this versatile thermoplastic comes in many variations and types. Due to its mechanical and electrical properties, it’s utilized in many different industries.

Polyethylene (PE)

Often used for film extrusion and blow molding, PE is a popular material that’s generally easy to handle and work with.

Polyoxymethylene

This is actually a blend of plastics. It’s popular for its strength, durability, hardness, and ability to withstand impact.
